Injured

I have never been an athlete, but I enjoy going to the gym. A few years ago, because I didn’t have the time to go the gym, I decided to do my workouts at home. I tried different websites and found one I really liked. I started doing HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) almost every day. After doing this for a year and a half, I hurt my lower back and hip.

That morning, I woke up like I always did, at 5:30 am and started my workout. During cool down, I did some yoga poses (which I know, I did yoga for 3 years) and during a back bend, something did not feel right with my right hip. I modified it and did not give it a second thought. The following day, my right butt hurt, but I thought it was just muscular and skipped my workout in order to recover.

The following morning, in the middle of my workout, my lower back started to hurt, so eased up, I tried to modified the moves, but the pain just kept getting worse and worse. I finished the workout, thinking I must have pulled a muscle, but by the end of the day, I was laying on my back crying in pain. Laying on my stomach felt like my back was breaking in two. I had this feeling, almost electric, that would go from my lower back, to my right butt, and move down my right leg. I now know it was my sciatic nerve.

My doctor could not see me until the following week. I thought I could wait, but the pain was so intense, I ended up going to a chiropractor. She fixed me and made the pain bearable. She explained that my right hip had rotated, but did not provide any exercise that I could do. The following week, the doctor gave me some muscle relaxers and told me it would go away in a few days. Well, it didn’t.

After that, I started going to a physical therapy clinic that provided exercises, which I did with them 3 times a week, for 6 weeks, unsupervised. I truly believe this made my injury even worse. It wasn’t until I talked to my sisters that I realized this is NOT how PT should be.

I found a different PT, she does cranial sacral therapy, and added massage therapy, and chiropractor visits. I did this for 5-6 months. Until I found Katy Bowman and Heidi Jones. I’ve been doing their exercises for 5 months now. I have not had the necessity to go to any therapist nor chiropractor and my pain level is 0, sometimes it goes up to 1-2, but it is not constant anymore and I am able to exercise daily.

UPDATE: I tried to do a yoga class and it was too much for my body… my hip came out of place and I started recovery all over again… I am going slower now. I am doing a lot of foot and hip strengthening and I am back to PT and massage therapy… one day at a time!
