Mukishoes Spring 2022 Collection: Lemon and Salvia
On March 27, 2022 by NoeliaCompany
Mukishoes is a small business owned by Madlen and Marta in Portugal. Their handcrafted shoes are made in a small, family-owned, local manufacturer with materials that are local, organic, and fair-trade, dyed with GOTS certified pigments. They don’t over produce, which means their models sellout fast and many of the models are not produced again (they use deadstock materials). They release collections in the Spring and Fall.
Materials
Both models are part of the Spring 2022 Collection and because of the nature of the materials, they won’t be produced again.
Each shoe is handcrafted with natural materials and ecologically dyed, smallt differences in colors and finishing are possible.
SALVIA
- upper: recycled linen (sage green)
- inner lining: organic cotton (mustard)
- sole: 100% natural rubber
- laces: raw cotton
LEMON
- upper: organic cotton (neon yellow)
- lining: organic cotton (light blue)
- laces: elastic laces (white)
- sole: recycled rubber (white)
Design
- They are gender neutral
- They accommodate narrow to medium width feet better.
- The sides of the shoe come up a little too high for my liking, but the materials are flexible and soft and I know they will soften up.
- The shape of the shoe (toebox) has changed for me in order to accommodate my feet.
Barefoot qualities
- Zero drop (no toe spring nor heel lift)
- Sole is thin (3.5 mm) and extremely flexible.
- Wide and round toe box that accommodates my mountain feet.
- Provides a lot of ground feel.
- Natural materials allow for foot and ankle mobility.
Soles:
- They use the same design for all models.
- Wrap around sole can expand in order to accommodate wider feet… they do not feel restrictive like other wrap-around soles.
- They are made of rubber and are extremely thin (3.5 mm). I was unable to wear my first pair of Mukishoes without an insole when I was transitioning to barefoot shoes. I needed a thicker sole for more protection as my feet were not strong enough yet. I wish I had known about their cork insoles, because they make a big difference for me.
Sizing
- All Mukishoes are made with the same sole, which means they will fit similarly.
- Once you know your size, you can stick with it in different models.
- I own several Mukishoes (which I have reviewed). I wear size 40 when I’m going to wear them barefoot (no socks, no extra insoles) and size 41 when I want more warmth (I add insoles and wear with socks).
My measurements:
- Length: 24.8 – 25 cm
- Width: 9.8 – 10 cm
Mukishoe measurements:
- Size 40 is 26.1 cm in length. The outsole measures 9.5 cm in width.
- Size 41 is 26.8 cm in length. The outsole measures 10 cm in width.
Fit
Both models, Lemon and Salvia, fit similarly. I ordered my traditional size 40 and they feel great when barefoot. I can also wear with thin toe socks comfortably.
As I stated under design, the sides of the shoes feel a little high on my ankles. The first time I wore my Salvia (recycled linen), my ankles had a red spot because of friction. I was worried I could only wear them with socks or I had to add bandaids (I had to do this with my Feelgrounds Original Mesh and hated it so much, I ended up reselling).
After that first wear, the friction was noticeable, but not uncomfortable. The more I wore them, the softer the linen became.
I did not have this problem with my Lemon model, which are made with Organic Cotton. They felt soft and comfortable from the beginning.
Another thing I noticed about my Mukishoes is their flexibility, not only allowing good ground feel, but molding to my feet.
The toe box on both models started a little slanted, which my feet are not, and with wear, the toe boxes have become more rounded. This is the beauty of natural materials.
Final thoughts
It is not a secret that I am a fan of the brand. I love color and these two models work great with my wardrobe. I am surprised on how much the materials of the shoes influence their comfortability. I definitely favor the softer organic cotton over the recycled linen. I am also loving the bright neon yellow!
